Can we do Surya Namaskar during periods?

Surya Namaskar practiced as prayer

The answer largely depends on the purpose for which you are practicing Sun Salutation.

Either you may practice it as a prayer to Sun God or you make the practice solely for fitness and health.

If you are offering Sun Salutation as a prayer, you should not practice it during periods.

But if you are doing it solely for the purpose of fitness and health, then there is no practical restriction. Yet you should not have heavy bleeding or cramping. However, my personal view is that It is not advisable to practice Surya Namaskar during periods. But why? Let me explain in detail.

Not advisable in the sense that your body is already in the process of physiologic uterine bleeding due to shedding of the endometrium. So your whole body involves itself is in that process. It is not advisable to disturb that process. If you do that, in my opinion, it may cause imbalances.

Ayurveda and Menstruation

In Ayurveda, Acharya Sushruta has said that the dark-colored blood gets collected during the whole month by the artavvimochinidhamani in the garbhashaya and this collected blood gets expelled through the yonimukha monthly by the action of Vayu (Apana Vayu). This is the phase of rajahsrava.

The Namaskar exercise should be suspended during the menstrual period, from the time the menses actually begin to flow until they stop, the normal period being four to six days. At the end of the period, the exercise should be begun again without delay.
